Project Updates: What’s In and What’s Out

So, if you all haven’t read already on our Youtube page, we recently had a massive overhaul of our team.  The end result?  A lot of empty positions and projects that hung in the balance.  But, in a good light, we were able to see who really was still with the team, and who no longer wanted/had time to be.

This being said, we had to decide which projects we’d still be pursuing and which had to be dropped for lack of staff.  And so, this list stands:

  • Unbelievable Outing is still going.  We’ve managed to keep one Korean translator to help us finish, and we should be done with the last few episodes within the next 2-3 months.
  • I know everyone was excited about this, but we had to drop plans for Infinity Challenge.  We just don’t have the time and staff to be able to take it on right now, though we still hope we can in the future.
  • Even though we’ve dropped Infinity Challenge, we are still taking on another variety show… WE GOT MARRIED!!  PLEASE NOTE THOUGH: we are only doing the missing couple cuts from episodes 45 to 48.  We are NOT taking up the show for the long-run.
  • For everyone who’s been asking, 18 Jin Bu Jin is still a go.  We’re currently almost done with episode 10, and are now working on episode 11.
  • Because our Chinese translator is diligently working on 18 JBJ, Butterfly Lovers will be on hold until we complete it.
  • 100% Senorita has been dropped because it is already being worked on by another, very dedicated subber [danseurella@youtube]
  • And lastly, the Japanese show that we wanted to tackle has also been dropped since we no longer have a Japanese translator.

With all the gaps on our team, we are still looking for staff!!  Most needed positions right now are:

  • Korean, Chinese, and Japanese translators
  • Timers
  • Encoders/Uploaders [would be extremely helpful if you know how to typeset]

Our Slow, But Steady Progress

So, this is not going to be the typical team update post, but instead, I’m going to take the time to blog a bit here about the team.

It’s going to be our third month open in a few days, and things are going a bit… slower than all of the founding staff had thought it would be.  Of course, we didn’t expect to be completing projects like there’s no tomorrow, but each of us had some of our own expectations.  Not to say that our work thus far has let us down, but things haven’t been exactly what any of us expected it to be.

We started out as a few timers simply wanting to see projects that were dropped to finally be completed so that former viewers would be able to see the end.  Now that we’re a full on group, I think we’ve all come to realize how much work and dedication being a subber really means.

Really, I never realized how hard it was – still is – to find translators!  Not many people apply, so we’ve had to advertise ourselves quite a bit, or even approach people that we didn’t quite know for assistance.  It’s hard when a casual subber comes along, agrees to help, then drops off the face of the earth [as I'm sure quite a few subbing groups have already experienced], especially if they were already assigned to a job.  But I’m thankful that we have some very dedicated translators who work terribly hard at translating whole episodes on their own.

So, that being said, I give much praise and salute the subbing teams, and especially the individuals, that have gone through the years working for the shows they enjoy seeing, for the groups they love, and for the viewers, whom even when some may give complaints, these groups continue to do what they can for the rest.

Also, I hope this kind of explains where we’ve been lately, and that we haven’t disappeared on you, so please don’t give up on us yet!  We’ve just released Butterfly Lovers Ep 1, and we’re currently trying very, very hard to finish up Unbelievable Outing [Korean translators are hardest to find!].  For those of you who have been requesting 18 Censored or Not, good news!  We are beginning to start translation for that episode, so be on the lookout!

Our New Forum

So if you haven’t visited our forum yet [or have, but didn't see the giant sign at the top], JK Subs Forum has moved back to InvisionFree! We just had too many problems putting up a layout, approving members, and other such bothersome details with the Zetaboard that we decided to move back. It was especially hard because Zetaboard is pretty new, thus less support/tutorials/etc. to help with it.

But anyway, this is the new forum: Visit Me!
If you are a registered member on the old forum, please RE-REGISTER onto the new forums! We will not be manually re-registering all the members. And if you’re not a member yet, please register! It’s quick and easy, and gives you an easy way to keep up with the team, as well as personally talk to the staff!

Unbelievable Outing Ep 8 Update

Many, many of you all have been asking about the next episode of Unbelievable Outing.  As we have announced first onto our YouTube page and now on our Forum, the episode has been delayed.

Our sole translator has just recently contacted us and has notified us that she has been extremely busy the past couple weeks and still has a lot going on at the moment, so she won’t be able to really work on them for another week or so. This would mean that we will most likely not be able to release the episode for another week and a half at the earliest, but we will work hard to get it out as soon as we can.

Again, we have every intention of finishing the series, and we’re sorry for the long wait.

Also, we are still looking for more translators [Korean, Japanese, and Mandarin], experienced timers, layout designers, and other positions so that we may be able to more smoothly accomplish the projects that we have set out to do. If you can lend any help, please check the Applications link on the menu for more details on jobs.

Because we are such a new group, we are looking for people who are willing to help us out. This is a low-pressure subbing group because the projects we plan to adopt are older and not more recent. Members will also have a chance to choose future projects that they wish to be subbed.

**Remember, the more team we get, the quicker we’re able to provide subs for everyone!

Positions open:

  • Korean Translators: translates spoken Korean dialogue into a typed-out English script onto a Word or Notepad file so that it may be converted to subtitles. [Understanding written Korean is a plus, but not a requirement]
  • Japanese Translators: translates spoken Japanese dialogue as above. [Once again, understanding written is a plus but not a requirement]
  • Mandrain Translators: translates spoken Mandrain dialogue as above [Will be translating TWdramas]. [Once again, understanding written is a plus but not a requirement]

A common thought is that you must speak Korean/Mandrain/Japanese to be on our team. You don’t!  The only position that requires fluency in those languages is being a translator!

  • Timers:  Time the translation file using a subbing program such as Subtitle workshop or Aegisub.
  • Encoders/Uploaders: joins the video file and subtitle file together with a program ie. VirtualDub [hardsubs] as well as upload onto the specified website
  • Other Ways to Help:

We need someone to help by running this WordPress account. It would very helpful if anyone applying for these positions knows how to create graphics for/code layouts for the blogging site they are applying to manage. With both positions, you would keep updated with important announcements like release dates, what stage are we in subbing, etc.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU AREN’T EXACTLY SURE HOW TO..FOR INSTANCE, TIME A VIDEO, WE HAVE TUTORIALS ONCE YOU JOIN THE TEAM AND PEOPLE MORE THAN WILLING TO HELP.
